Coastal Cottages: From Temporary to Permanent

Bay-Waveland Area Habitat for Humanity is part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Housing Alliance: a coalition of organizations who've joined forces to overcome obstacles to affordable housing that continue to plague the Mississippi gulf coast. On August 28, 2008 - one day before the third anniversary of hurricane Katrina, the group unveiled their first tangible, housing solution: the Coastal Cottage. The modular home is created from a Mississippi cottage, which is removed from its mobile frame and placed on a permanent foundation. An additional "tag" unit, measuring 200 square feet, is attached to the side, bringing to total living space to 1000 square feet. The roof and siding are re-finished to integrate the two modules, making it nearly impossible to distinguish the tag from the original cottage.
